Data Insight

According to our quant research, 89% of Goodreads users use their WTR list to decide what to read next.

Hypothesis

Readers will return to Fable if we help them narrow down their WTR lists to their next read because this is where users are accustomed to going when deciding what to read next.

Outcome

A big win for retention: Users who saved a recommendation from the mood quiz have significantly higher retention rates than our general population (80%+ week 1 retention). After we launched, 65% of users surveyed reported that this tool was either 4/5 out of 5 helpful with finding their next book. 41% of users who used this tool actually started books immediately after using this tool, and overall, 30% of weekly active users are engaging with this feature, and in January, a month where users regularly update their WTR (Want to Read) lists, this feature is even more popular. This feature is continually cited as a very delightful experience on Fable.

Live Experience

Experience

  • Product + Design led a research sprint diving into the key painpoints in readers' lives, with the top painpoint being finding a book to read right now. This tool is a response to that painpoint.

  • Fable has a history of being known as a utilitarian (albeit, also beautiful) tool for book-lovers. We wanted to add some magic to the book discovery process.

  • We wanted to leverage the data moat we had built around user preferences and interests in moods, pace, genres and styles. This tool surfaced those preferences into a list of books a user may actually enjoy reading.
